An earth cable’s purpose is to direct any extra current safely to the ground. The surge link from the shield remains inactive until a bigger than normal voltage seems. This excess current is then securely redirected through the extra earth cable, right into the ground. This prevents more current than ordinary from flowing to your appliances effectively making sure they are protected from any harm that can result from power surges.
